Tell Us A Little Bit About Your Weight Struggle
I’ve been overweight most of my adult life. I struggled with binge eating and using food as comfort when I felt depressed and tired. I was about 220 lbs and extremely tired all of the time.

I have a stressful job as a special education teacher and teaching students virtually during the pandemic enhanced that stress which then led to depression and binge eating.

What Was Your Wake-Up Call Or “A-Ha Moment” That Caused You To Really Commit Yourself To Succeeding?
I decided to join an adult martial arts class for fun and fitness. I noticed quickly that my weight was a hindrance in learning martial arts. I would also see pictures of myself on the martial arts Facebook page and be embarrassed of the way I looked.

I had tried to lose weight off and on for years and wasn’t successful. For some reason I stuck with it this time and started seeing results which only encouraged me further.

How Have Your Eating Habits Changed Since Beginning Your Journey? What Did You Eat Before And What Are You Eating Now?
I started using an app on my phone that tracked my food. I increased my protein intake and stayed in a calorie deficit. I ate more chicken, turkey, fish, vegetables, and non-processed foods.

What Is The Difference In Your Fitness Before You Started And Now?
I had been a runner for years. Even at my heaviest I ran half marathons, but not well, and it took me days to recover. I was slow and sluggish during my runs, despite being a runner when I was younger.

Now, 60 lbs lighter, I’m faster, stronger and in better shape. I’m not sore after my runs and I feel great after my races rather than like I had been hit by a truck. I’m quicker and stronger at martial arts as well.

What Has Been The Biggest Change/Payoff For You So Far?
The biggest change has been the way I feel about myself. I feel stronger, happier, more confident, and more energetic. I am so much smarter about what I put into my body. I actually enjoy eating healthy now.

How Much Weight Have You Lost? How Long Did It Take You To Lose It?
I’ve lost a total of 60 lbs and it took me 9 months.
