Is Menopausal Hormone Therapy effective for tendinopathy?

Tendons are complex. Not only do they have to manage very high peak loads but their health is also influenced by multiple factors outside of the tendon itself.

One key factor is hormonal change associated with menopause, such as decreasing oestrogen levels. This is thought to affect collagen synthesis and tensile strength and may partly explain when tendinopathy is common in peri-menopausal women.

Many people I work with in-clinic have asked whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may help with tendinopathy. Up until now, we haven’t had much research to help us answer this but a new study from Cowan et al. (2021) may change this. We explore the study’s findings and how we might apply them in our video below.
